Originally from Minneapolis, MN, Kelly Grill is a classically trained musician and percussionist who has performed across the United States, and internationally in Norway, Italy, Austria, and Hungary. Specializing in classical Western percussion, Grill has performed as both soloist and chamber musician in all varieties of music, ranging from contemporary, avant-garde, jazz, marching, orchestral and large ensemble, to pop, and world music. As a soloist, Grill has performed Eric Ewazen’s Concerto for Marimba and Strings with the Concordia College Orchestra (MN) under Bruce Houglum, and also performed Gene Koshinski’s Concerto for Marimba and Choir with the University of South Carolina Aiken Concert Choir under Joel Scraper. Kelly has extensive teaching background in both private and public school settings. As a Graduate Student he taught Percussion Methods course at University of South Carolina (Columbia), assisted with coaching and conducting of the USC Percussion Players ensemble, and taught private percussion lessons within the USC studio. At the University level, Grill was the former adjunct Professor of Percussion at both Brevard College (NC), and at the University of South Carolina Aiken. Grill holds a BM Degree in Percussion Performance from Concordia College (Moorhead, MN), and a MM Degree from The Ohio State University. His teachers include Dr. Scott Herring, Dr. Susan Powell, Joe Krygier, and Dr. David P. Eyler. Currently, Grill performs in several local Twin Cities groups - community orchestras such as the Wayzata Symphony Orchestra, the Kenwood Symphony Orchestra, and the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra among others, and additionally plays with the Minnesota Symphonic Winds concert band. He also freelances around the Twin Cities area and teaches music lessons at Shakopee High School. Kelly resides in Plymouth, MN, with his dog, Sonja.
